I knew Dr. Turner in my capacity as music producer with CBC since 1991. Over the years I had the pleasure of hearing his music, seeing him at concerts and meeting students of his who have gone on to become successful composers themselves.
Dr. Turner’s studies first in Canada, then London, followed by his service in the RCAF in World War II, then his continuation of studies with Olivier Messiaen, plus his work as a music producer at CBC and finally as Professor of Theory and Composition at the University of Manitoba are noteworthy.
Dr Turner’s quiet but steady contribution to Canadian music composition is significant. His list of works is vast and comprehensive – ranging from solo pieces, to vocal repertoire to orchestral works. I was always impressed at the number of commissioned works he was asked to write.
Dr. Turner’s accomplishments were great; his contributions to Canadian culture are memorable. And his impact is far reaching. I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to work with him.
